There is a range of instruments available to public authorities to influence the development and operations of the transport sector. The most common is the funding and provision of infrastructure, which can be seen as direct forms of involvement. Yet, there are many more indirect instruments that influence numerous aspects of the transport system, such as setting technical (design of infrastructure and modes) and operational (weight limits) standards.
