The “International Encyclopedia of Transportation” is now available via academic publisher Elsevier. This massive academic work edited by Roger Vickerman consists of seven volumes with contributions by hundreds of scholars with various specializations in transport studies.
I authored an entry on the topic of transport modes and globalization. Transportation modes are a critical component of the global economy by supporting the mobility of passengers and freight. They influence globalization through the mobility and trade relations they support, business and social interactions, the organization of value chains, as well as manufacturing and distribution conveyances such as vehicles, aircrafts, and ships. Freight transportation is particularly unnoticed even if globalization depends on the mobility of raw materials, parts, and finished goods. This freight mobility is also complemented by the mobility of people through borders for purposes such as business, tourism, and even migration.
