The large majority of automobile trips are performed over short distances. For instance, about 80% of all car trips in the United States are done over distances of less than 20 km, which is the commuting range. At 100km, 96% of car trips are accounted for, leaving only a small portion of trips for interurban travel. Although the data relates to the United States, such a trip distribution characterizes car trips across the world.
