The number of travelers processed through airport security checkpoints in the US fell sharply in the early weeks of the COVID-19 pandemic (March/April 2020). Numbers remained at around 35% of 2019 levels throughout the remaining of 2020. By mid-2021, as vaccination became widespread, the demand began to recover, and by May 2022 traffic levels were at around 85% – 90% of pre-pandemic levels.
