There is a proportional relationship between GPD per capita (adjusted for purchasing power parity) and the level of primary energy consumption. Economies above the trend tend to be major energy producers or have a substantial heavy manufacturing orientation. Economies below the trend are more oriented towards the service economy and have a higher share of alternative sources of energy.
