The introduction of the first transatlantic jet clippers in 1958 using the Boeing 707 revolutionized long distance air transportation by linking the North American East Coast to Western Europe in about 7 hours (with a refueling stop in Gander, Newfoundland). Air travel was still for the wealthy, explaining the high quality amenities offered to the passengers (e.g. food). However, it is not until the early 1970s with the introduction of the Boeing 747 that airfare would reach a level affordable to a larger share of the population and become an important factor in the promotion of international tourism.
